Short-Term Treatment of Metformin and Glipizide on Oxidative Stress, Lipid Profile and Renal Function in a Rat Model with Diabetes Mellitus

Background: Oxidative stress, lipid profile and renal functions are well-known conventional risk factors for diabetes mellitus (DM). Metformin gliclazide popularly used monotherapy drugs the treatment of DM. Aims: This study aims to assess short-term single dual therapy glipizide/metformin on oxidative glycemic control, serum profiles function in diabetic rats. Methods: DM was induced rats with streptozotocin (STZ), then five different treatments were applied, including group I (untreated healthy control), II (diabetic untreated), III treated metformin), IVI glipizide) V a combination metformin glipizide. Lipid peroxidation (LPO), nitric oxide (NO), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density (LDL), creatinine urea measured. Results: Compared untreated group, FBG HbA1c significantly reduced groups (p < 0.01) (159.7 mg/dL & 6.7%), glipizide (184.3 7.3%) (118 5.2%), respectively. Treatment decreased LPO NO levels but increased TAC more than compared Furthermore, (19.8 mg/dL, p 0.001), (22.7 (25.7 0.001) (32.2 mg/dL). Both their exhibited substantial effect HDL, LDL atherogenic index. Conclusions: These results suggest that therapeutic benefits complementary. superior performance improving control decreasing while effective against dyslipidemia. findings could be helpful future vascular patients, antilipidemic medicines improve quality life.
